Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Because I am a Girl 2013: In Double Jeopardy: Adolescent Girls and Disasters

Released on International Day of the Girl 2013, this video is a visual representation of a study of the same title done by Plan UK (United Kingdom) on the difficulties faced by girls in disasters. According to Plan UK: "When a disaster strikes, everybody suffers, but particularly adolescent girls. In the struggle for survival, they simply become invisible. Together we can help girls transform their future." The video describes those difficulties and how girls are affected; it recommends consulting girls and empowering them to be a force for change. It then shows cases of girls beginning projects and programmes that help their situations and communities, such as a girl in the Philippines who campaigned to move her school out of a landslide zone and a girl in Bangladesh who developed an action plan for flood disasters in her community.
