Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Information on "Friend or Foe? Partnering With Media for an Effective HIV/AIDS Response" (Monday July 19 2010, from 16:30-18:00, in Global Village Session Room 1) - includes a focus on successes and challenges of working with the media on HIV/AIDS. Requesting your response and ideas...

Facilitated by Olayide Akanni from Nigeria, this session will explore the successes and challenges of working with the media on HIV/AIDS and give recommendations for effective advocacy for programming needs of marginalised populations. Also, successful case studies on working with the media to promote accountability and good governance in the context of HIV/AIDS will be shared. Participants will learn skills on how to make their work newsworthy, develop press releases, prepare for interviews, and take practical steps on how to better partner with the media to keep their issues "in the news". Finally, the session will focus on how to use media and social networking tools to further advocacy campaign agendas.
