Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

This group of training materials, produced by the Core Group for the Regional Monitoring and Evaluation Working Group for Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA MEWG), has been published as an aid to development of the knowledge and skills of individuals within national HIV monitoring and evaluation (M&E) systems or organisations engaged in similar activities.  For this audience of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and their support programmes, training organisations, individual trainers, and community-based organisations (CBOs), the curriculum is made up of a series of facilitator-led training modules on HIV M&E and is designed to be taken "off the shelf" by a facilitator or learner and used to develop capacity.

Each module includes a learner's guide and a facilitator's guide, along with a variety of supporting materials (e.g., pre-session self-assessments for participants, PowerPoint slides, and handouts).  The learner's guide is aimed at both those who will be attending educational/training sessions and those who may want to increase their knowledge and skills independently, at their own pace.  The facilitator's guide has been written for those who plan to facilitate the delivery of this module in an educational session (e.g., a workshop, a training session, or an educational course). The learner's guide and facilitator's guide, along with materials needed to facilitate a workshop, form a complete educational package for each module within the overall curriculum.

Some of the individual module topics include:

  • Human Capacity Development for M&E systems;
  • Establishing and Maintaining M&E partnerships;
  • Advocacy, Communication, and Culture for HIV M&E systems;
  • HIV-related surveys and surveillance;
  • Using data to inform HIV policies, advocacy, programmes, and services; and
  • Results-based management and application to national HIV strategic planning processes and results frameworks.
