Journal of Technology in Human Services

The Journal of Technology in Human Services explores the uses and potentials of computer and related technologies in mental health, developmental disabilities, welfare, and other human services. It covers a wide range of applications, including direct service technologies. According to the publishers, it provides the necessary historical perspectives on the use of technology in the human service field, as well as articles providing technology literacy and information on technological developments.
The Journal of Technology in Human Services focuses on areas such as:
- Potential and trial uses of new technology such as multimedia, geographic information systems (GIS), neural networks, intranets, extranets, performance support systems, telehealth, and virtual meetings or communities.
- Applications specific to human service practitioners such as clinicians, managers, fundraisers, and policy makers. Descriptions of these applications should include the setting, technologies involved, results, and lessons learned.
- Research studies on topics such as factors that influence application success, ways to identify and overcome resistance, the life cycle of technological hardware and software, and the impact of applications.
- Discussion of controversial issues such as confidentiality, liability, job displacement, and data ownership.
- Examples of good practice such as technology strategic plans, feasibility studies, Web course designs, and evaluations of technology.
Some examples of recent articles in this scientific periodical include Privacy, Social Network Sites, and Social Relations, Current and Future Trends in Internet-Supported Mental Health Interventions, A Comprehensive Review and a Meta-Analysis of the Effectiveness of Internet-Based Psychotherapeutic Interventions, and The Use of Social Media to Improve Social Work Education in Remote Areas. For 2012, The Journal of Technology in Human Services will also publish a special issue on methods for analysing social media, focusing on research strategies used in social media analysis.
