Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

"Klahan9 (which means 'Brave9') is a... multi-media initiative on TV, radio, online. It aims to support young Cambodian people to improve their life by providing information about employment, economic security/opportunities and negotiating with family and other decision makers around jobs."


The Klahan9 programme, developed in Cambodia by BBC Media Action, combines radio, phone, internet, and a TV drama series to give career guidance and employment tips to young Cambodians 15-30 years old. It is funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Embassy of Sweden.

Communication Strategies

"Klahan9 aims to address [employment] challenges on TV, radio and online in a number of ways, including airing interviews from employment experts, live call-in programmes, ...game shows and educational dramas. The shows will cover a range of topics: from how to search for employment opportunities more effectively, CV-writing and interviewing skills, workplace safety, employee rights and responsibilities, economic migration and the risks posed by people traffickers."

 

The radio phone-in programme is youth-led. It is supported by both a website in English and Khmer and a Facebook page, through which videos of programme development are available.

 

Khalan9 is available online via Soundcloud, organised chronologically with topics of weekly discussions and guest speakers, such as: Mr. Tin Kolmen, Brand Branding Manager, speaking on the question "If you know people’s private information and talk behind people’s back to others, does it mean that you’re good at networking?"; Mr. Sok Visalbrosith, Actor and Professional Photographer, speaking on "If you want to successful in negotiation, you must talk more than the others, right?"; and You Ousa, General Secretary Council Member of Inspection Research and Consultation on Lawsuit, speaking on "They said those who used nepotism to get into a job have a limited ability, is it true?".

 

The Klahan9 website provides a career tips section that includes such titles as: How to make your CV and Cover letter interesting to read; How to prepare for Job Interview; and Access to the right Information: how to keep updated with job opportunities. Podcasts are also available through the website.

"Young people in Cambodia face high levels of unemployment and there’s stiff competition for jobs. Also, work experience is hard to come by and many young people find it difficult to access career guidance and training. Those who are in work might contend with low wages, informal contracts, insufficient on-the-job training and long working hours. In addition, many young Cambodians are interested in migrating to the cities or abroad, but are inadequately prepared to make the move."
