The Communication Initiative
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Media Course on Oil, Gas, and Minerals (Jun 11-13 2014)

Applications are invited from practitioners who work for media organisations based in Ghana, Tanzania, and Uganda, who are interested to build their capacity to report on the extractive sectors of oil, gas and minerals. Successful applicants will be sponsored and are required to commit to and complete all aspects of the training. The programme will run for six months and includes a series of individual and collective learning activities and professional support. The training will be delivered in partnership with PenPlusBytes in Ghana, Journalists' Environmental Association of Tanzania, and African Centre for Media Excellence in Uganda.

At the core of the training programme, developed in collaboration with Thomson Reuters Foundation, are two residential courses. The foundation Course A, an Africa regional workshop, will take place in Kampala, Uganda on June 4-13 and will bring together participants from Ghana, Tanzania, and Uganda. The follow-up Course B will consist of three parallel national workshops in Ghana, Tanzania, and Uganda. These will take place in August 2014.

According to the organisers, Revenue Watch Institute, good management of extractive resources and revenues requires informed, responsive, and dynamic media to provide necessary oversight and inform the public about critical governance issues. This training is the fifth in a series of courses under the program for Strengthening Media Oversight of the Extractive Sectors, which started in 2010.

Registration information:

The programme is designed for early- to mid-career journalists. The application is a competitive process, and training will be offered to reporters submitting the strongest applications.
