Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Peace Diaries has produced a radio programme for broadcast during the United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg, South Africa (August 26 through September 6, 2002). The twenty 10-minute segments will be broadcast over the WorldSpace World Summit channel via the AfriStar satellite to an audience including the approximately 60,000 conference delegates as well as heads of state and government, national delegates, NGO leaders, business and other major groups, and a potential 20 million listeners in Africa, parts of Europe, and the Middle East.
Communication Strategies
The radio programmes features commentary gleaned from interviews with peacemakers, educators, scientists, cultural icons, and students. These interviews focus on issues central to the WSSD, such as food, water, shelter, sanitation, health, energy, gender equity, economic security, and education.

The programmes also showcase the work of students who contributed to Peace Diaries, Volume One. This 300-page book on human rights and peace was created in reaction to the September, 2001 terrorist attacks on the USA to give kids a healthy way to express their fears, concerns, and hopes for peace. It features writing and artwork by students in New York, Azerbaijan, Israel, France, Argentina, Chile, Ghana and South Africa.

An upcoming project is Peace Diaries, Volume Two, Cultivating Peace. This publication is designed to help students develop peacemaking capacities in the context of topics presented at the WSSD conference. The project will launch in Fall 2002 and will involve students from around the world.
