Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

"Within these six weeks, the Gender & Militarism Campaign will advocate for awareness and action around the multilayered connections between gender and militarism, and will highlight gender-sensitive nonviolent action (people power) as a powerful alternative to address conflict."

Created for the International Women’s Day for Peace and Disarmament, May 24 2014, this toolkit supports the efforts of the Women Peacemakers Program (WPP) in a campaign entitled: "Gender & Militarism: Analyzing the Linkages to Strategize for Peace", May 24-July 4 2014. The campaign intends to highlight the need for a feminist analysis of militarisation. Its supporters invite people to participate with the WPP by publishing stories, facts, and figures on the subject in blogs, on Twitter (hashtag: #Gender&Militarism), and on Facebook. The toolkit includes campaign messages, Facebook and Twitter sample messages, a background section, and a calendar of activities including:

  • Online statement by WPP and ABAAD
  • Resource Center for Gender Equality
  • Tweetathon by the 16 Days Campaign (@16DaysCampaign)
  • Facebook discussion by the Ecumenical Women’s Initiative

Communication activities include workshops, Twitter chats, and film screenings, as well as a call to share stories, organise social media events, post resources and/or visuals on gender and militarism, write an article, and/or contribute to the Facebook and Twitter discussion.
