Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Togo - Communication Executive Summary

Summary

As of November 16, the Central African Republic (CAR) has 0 confirmed cases of Polio for 2004 (WHO weekly Bulletin).

The consultants noted that government member participation in the local communication committees has been irregular and that they lack motivation to participate. This can be contrasted with the improvements in interagency partnerships with Rotary, Red Cross and the WHO and the strong links with the media. The consultants reported the signing of contracts with 35 radio stations and the development of media plans and engagement with journalists to improve upon the delivery of messages. Unfortunately the press releases didn’t reach all the radio stations because of administrative bureaucracy and not all of the stations were able to broadcast the messages because of technical difficulties.

The consultants have also facilitated the development of two small magazines in concert with Unicef and local radio stations. Unfortunately, like in many other countries, there have been delays in the freeing of financing and in the circulation of support materials. The marking of the children has also not been identical in all districts and their has been some weakness in the cartography activities.
