ICT in Conflict and Disaster Response and Peacebuilding

Information and communciations technology (ICT) is being used in many ways to help with disaster and conflict early-warning, management and resolution and for peacebuilding; this map offers a resource of who is doing what worldwide. This online project, entitled ICT in Conflict and Disaster Response and Peacebuilding Crowdmap, captures the large variety of activities carried out in projects, programmes, and initiatives at various levels of society and decision-making; their content ranges from policy frameworks to actual technological solutions. According to the authors, the intent of the work is to encourage and support networking and collaboration for the sharing of information, ideas, and best practice to help those affected by conflict and crisis.

The service allows organisations working in the field of ICT in conflict and disaster response and peacebuilding to be represented on the map by submitting a report to the project describing the activities in which they participate and their respective geographies. Reporting is done via the project website or via email.

On the homepage of the project website, the following options are available: 

• Information for individual entries in a location can be retrieved through clicking on a dot in the map in the desired location;
• All entries per category can be displayed in the map through clicking on a category in the map legend;
• The Search field in the upper right corner of the page allows for the insertion of search terms. The resulting entries will be displayed in text format; more information on the results of the search can be obtained through clicking on a search result.

Clicking on the reports tab, an alphabetical list of entries is provided, which can be individually selected for viewing of summary details. Further filtering is enabled, allowing users to filter reports by category (Capacity Building, Community Initatives, Policies, etc), location, type (web, email, Twitter, etc), media content, verification status, and user-customised fields.
