Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Nominations are open for the i4d Award 2007, to be presented at the eINDIA2007 Conference and Exhibition on July 31 2007, in recognition of exemplary and innovative projects which demonstrate the potential of information and communication technologies (ICT) for sustainable and equitable development.


Award Objectives:

  • To identify and highlight a project that exemplifies the kind of implementation that can be easily replicated and at the same time proves efficient and sustainable, especially projects implemented in India and the South Asian region.
  • To learn about the latest and most innovative initiatives in the domain of ICTs for Development.
  • To spread awareness about the role of ICTs in addressing social concerns.
  • To identify and popularise emerging leaders and innovative projects from the grass-roots.

The nominated projects will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  1. Economic cost and sustainability, stakeholder support;
  2. Gender parity, and other inclusiveness indicators;
  3. Impact on livelihoods and society in general;
  4. Demonstrable effects on the project target groups;
  5. Community initiatives and ownership;
  6. The measure of replication; and
  7. Extent of collaboration.

Submission Guidelines:

  • All submissions must be made in English and online, using the nomination form.
  • A project can be nominated both by the institution that has implemented it and by another institution/individual.
  • All competing projects must be either completed or be at "an exciting stage of development" for at least two months before the closing date for entries. The jury will only evaluate and compare projects that can show measurable outcomes and impact.
  • All indicated fields of the entry form must be filled out, or the jury will not evaluate the project.
  • Participants must illustrate how their use of ICTs creates new avenues for the cause of human and social development.
  • The project must be verifiable, i.e. able to present credible references from independent third parties.
  • The project must refrain from promoting
    sectarian or other personal beliefs.
