Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

Journeys of Belonging is a multimedia project that takes an in-depth look at the personal narratives of 17 women and men chosen for diversity. The project collected stories from people of diverse faiths, cultures, ages, gender identities, and nations. They are intended to reveal "the many layers of society to which each of us belongs, and the paths we travel to find our place within them."

The website organises the stories as videos of each person's "Journey of Belonging" by person or by theme. It has been jointly developed by the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, the British Council, the University of Missouri School of Journalism, and the Reynolds Institute. The project videos, compiled on a website, intends to "tackle... mistaken religious, cultural and gender identity stereotypes like the inaccurate assumption that non-Westerners hold contrary values to those of Americans, the British and other Europeans."
